A headless CMS stores and edits your content separately from the website that displays it. Your team edits text, images and products in a simple editor, and the website, an app or an AI assistant fetches that content through an API. It suits businesses that update content often or publish in more than one place; a five-page brochure site rarely needs one.
Traditional and headless, side by side
A traditional content management system (CMS) such as WordPress keeps the editor, the database and the page templates in one system: the same software that stores your content also builds every page when someone visits.
A headless CMS does one job, managing content, and hands that content to a separate front end through an API. The “head” is the website people see. Headless simply means the editor isn’t tied to it.
Why businesses choose headless
The separation brings some practical benefits:
- Speed: the website can be built as fast static pages served from a global network, rather than assembled on every visit.
- Security: there is no public admin login on the website itself, which removes a common target.
- Reuse: the same content can feed a website, an app, email or an AI assistant.
- Freedom: you can redesign the website later without moving your content.
The trade-offs
Headless isn’t free of compromise:
- More moving parts: the editor, the website and the hosting are separate services that need to be set up to work together.
- Previews and page building have to be configured rather than coming out of the box.
- Some plugins you might expect from WordPress don’t exist; features are built or integrated instead.
When it is worth it
If you publish news, events, products or articles every week, or several people edit the site, a headless CMS usually pays for itself in speed and fewer problems. If your site changes a few times a year, it is often simpler to ask your web team to make the changes for you.
